Lesson 3.5 · 3:36

What "online" means

Goal: Explain in plain words what hosting is and how a URL differs from a file on your laptop.

Try it

No install today, just noticing.

  1. Open your app and copy the full address from the address bar.
  2. Open any website you use and copy its address too.
  3. In a note, write both, and under each answer: Who can open this? Does it need my laptop to be on?

You're done when your note has both addresses and correct answers for each. (Suggested: your path: only you, needs your laptop. The website: anyone, doesn't need your laptop.)

Recap

  • A path (file://) points to a file on your own computer. Only you can open it.
  • Hosting puts your files on someone else's always-on computer.
  • A URL (https://) is the public address. Same files, new home.

Next lesson (3.6): upload your folder to a host and get your own public URL.
