Lesson 5.1 · 3:47

Meet the practice app

Goal: Run a small practice app on your own laptop, so you have a safe place to break things on purpose.

Try it

  1. Download the practice app from the link below this lesson. Unzip it into your course folder, for example ai-native/practice-app.
  2. Open the terminal in that folder and start OpenCode (opencode).
  3. Make a save point first (lesson 2.6): "Initialise git here if needed and make a save point called 'practice app, untouched'."
  4. Ask: "Check whether Node.js is installed by running node --version. It needs version 20 or newer. If it's missing, explain how to install it on my computer, step by step, and wait for me."
  5. When Node is ready, ask: "Start the app with node serve.mjs and tell me the address."
  6. Open http://127.0.0.1:4174 in your browser. Submit "Repair the light". Mark it done.
  7. To stop the app later, click the terminal running it and press Ctrl+C.

You're done when you've seen your own request in the list at the localhost address, and your save point exists.

Stuck on Node? Copy the exact error message to OpenCode and ask what it means. That's lesson 4.1, context beats clever wording.

Recap

  • A practice app is a safe place to break things on purpose, like a flight simulator.
  • Localhost is an address that only works on your own computer.
  • Save point first, then run. Undo exists before anything can go wrong.

Next lesson (5.2): we break it. A saved request vanishes, and you write down exactly what happened.
